The Oxford University Bee Laboratory in the Department of Zoology is offering a 1 year full-time Postdoctoral position (with the possibility of extension for an additional 2 years) to study gustatory coding in bee species. The overall goal of the project is to characterise how populations of bee gustatory neurons respond to mixtures of sugars and potentially toxic compounds found in floral nectar. In collaboration with the lab of Dr Mark Stopfer (US National Institute of Health), this project will use multichannel extracellular recording techniques to study populations of gustatory neurons projecting from the bee’s mouthparts in the buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) and the honeybee (Apis mellifera). The postholder will also work with another PDRA to identify how gustatory input drives feeding behaviour. This post is part of an active and interdisciplinary research group – the lab of Professor Geraldine Wright – who work on the physiology and behaviour of bee species.

This post is ideally suited to applicants with a PhD/DPhil in biology or neuroscience where the candidate has experience making multichannel recordings and handling data from multichannel recordings. The ideal candidate will have experience recording from insect chemosensory neurons with skills in data analysis including spike sorting. Candidates with strong scientific writing skills (in English) will be preferred. For questions about this position please contact the PI via email (geraldine.wright@zoo.ox.ac.uk).
