The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute
University of Toronto

The Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is seeking a dynamic research leader to be Head of the Program in Neurosciences & Mental Health. Research in this program aims to uncover the mechanisms regulating development and plasticity of complex neural systems in animal models and humans by applying a wide spectrum of approaches including molecular genetics, electrophysiology, behavior, cognition and neuroimaging. Our ultimate goal is to translate discoveries to innovative solutions for mitigating and curing brain diseases in children.  It is expected that candidates will have an international reputation as a researcher, in one of these areas.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, MD or equivalent, and proven research leadership excellence.  Wherein a practicing MD, the successful candidate will have obtained an appropriate Certificate of Registration from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (license to practice), and appropriate VISA, if applicable.  The Program Head will collaborate with senior leaders and be responsible for the overall scope, focus and direction of research within the program, and will play an advisory role in developing and implementing scientific priorities within the Research Institute to ensure SickKids remains at the forefront of the disciplines represented in the program.  The Program Head will also work with the other Program Heads to establish inter-programmatic projects, to promote information sharing and to maximize use of resources.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Senior Scientist in the Research Institute and would be expected to qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level (status only) in the appropriate department at the University of Toronto.  The Program Head role is a five-year appointment, with the potential to renew this leadership role for a further 5-years following a successful Program review.

The Neurosciences & Mental Health Research Program is located in the state-of-the-art Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, located in the Discovery District in the heart of downtown Toronto.  The Neurosciences & Mental Health Program consists of 41 investigators and 225 graduate and postdoctoral trainees and staff, offering a unique environment for medical science discoveries with nine teaching and research hospitals and the University of Toronto, Canada’s largest university, in close proximity.
