Job details

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to work on an exciting project in the area of dopaminergic neuron metabolism in Parkinson’s disease. The project is a collaboration with an industrial partner. You will join the lab of Dr Heather Mortiboys, an internationally recognised research group, within a vibrant and stimulating environment at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).

You will be a practically skilled, well organised and committed Researcher who will join a team to investigate potential new therapeutic candidate molecules in a project supported by the leading company.

You will conduct laboratory research on a semi-independent basis under the direction of the principal investigator testing therapeutic candidates in Parkinson’s patient-derived neurons, focusing particularly on mitochondrial parameters. You will be expected to design, execute and evaluate experiments; keep excellent experimental records; prepare reports regularly and feedback to the industrial partner in regular conference calls and written reports. You are also expected to contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, attend and deliver seminars; locally, nationally and internationally.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with experience in metabolic assays and excellent tissue culture skills. The candidate should be passionate about neurodegenerative disease research, ideally with a track record of translational research in this area and a PhD (or equivalent experience) in molecular or cellular biology, or neuroscience.

You will have a strong background in molecular and cellular neurobiology with an emphasis on mitochondria. With experience in a range of techniques, particularly cell-based assays in human cells. The ideal candidate will have experience in cellular assays in multi-well plate format using biochemistry and high content screening. The candidate should be strongly motivated, self-driven, able to accept direction and be an excellent team player. Good communication, written and interpersonal skills are expected.
