This post is available for 30 months on a project funded by the Medical Research Council, led by Dr. Scott Cairney. The overarching aim of this project is to understand the neurobiological mechanisms by which sleep supports emotional memory. The planned experiments will use a variety of techniques, including behavioural testing, sleep polysomnography, fMRI, electrocardiography and electrodermal activity monitoring. Studies will make use of the Department of Psychology’s new, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory, as well as the world-leading neuroimaging facilities at York Neuroimaging Centre.

Duties of the post-holder will include: carrying out studies of sleep and emotional memory in healthy adults; analysing and interpreting experimental data; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities; contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research.

Applicants should have a PhD in Psychology or a related discipline (or expect to be awarded this in the near future), and an evidenced ability to conduct and analyse experiments related to memory and/or emotion in adults. Experience of carrying out overnight sleep studies in the lab, as well as experience in fMRI data collection/analysis and the other planned methodologies is highly desirable.
