The Centre for Educational Neuroscience (CEN) is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to contribute to the following Wellcome Trust / Educational Endowment Foundation funded research project: Understanding Learning of Counterintuitive Concepts through Knowledge Interference Control in Science and Mathematics Education (UnLoCKE). The post will be based at the UCL Institute of Education, UCL Knowledge Lab. The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is a world-leading centre for research and teaching in social science and education, ranked first for education worldwide in the 2018 QS World University Rankings for the fifth year running. The Knowledge Lab is a research centre within the Department of Culture Communication and Media at the UCL IOE, whose research focuses on cutting edge technologies for education and where many technological applications for learning and development are also built. 

The successful candidate will lead the deployment of an individualised unLOCKE intervention in 8 schools in the Greater London area. This will involve liaising with schools and overseeing the appropriate deployment of the intervention in the target schools. Following the data collection, the candidate will be responsible for data analysis and specification of design recommendations for enhancing the adaptive capabilities of the unLOCKE software.

Specific duties will include contributing to the experimental design, taking the leading role in testing of child participants and data collection, analysing data using advanced statistical and data analytics methods and tests, working collaboratively with the rest of the unLOCKE team based at Birkbeck and the IOE, contributing significantly to the writing of journal articles and other forms of scientific dissemination, and participating in public dissemination of the project.

This post is funded for 12 months in the first instance.

Key Requirements

Candidates should have experience in educational learning analytics/educational data mining techniques for understanding human learning and development in the context of designing software for learning/educational applications as well as an understanding of human-computer interaction methods, including methods for informing software design, along with experience of running research within a school setting is also expected. This post will require working within schools, testing primary school children, and liaising with teachers, headteachers and parents, and with the UnLOCKE team.
