An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (dependent on experience and research outputs) to join the Neuroscience department. As a Fellow, you will use your research, skills, knowledge and expertise to contribute and complement the aims of the Department. Your immediate priority will be to establish a programme of personal research, which will attract external funding, in order to develop research of international standing. Upon conclusion of your Fellowship you will have undertaken significant pieces of publishable research. You will build, lead and manage your programme of research, and commit significant time and effort in managing future research activity. Your programme of work will align strategically with the wider research mission at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).

SITraN brings together under one roof, state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment including expertise in basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, neuropathology, computational biology, and clinical trials methodology. This multidisciplinary approach enables our team of basic scientists and clinical academics to work together to drive the translation agenda and to harness basic science to underpin drug discovery and clinical trials based on rational targets of proven preclinical effectiveness. SITraN research teams have key skills in cellular and molecular biology, disease modelling, human neuropathology, viral vector technology, genetics, pharmacology, gene therapy, RNA processing, glial and mitochondrial biology, computational biology/bioinformatics, electrophysiology, stem cell neurobiology and preclinical screening for new therapeutics in neurodegenerative disorders; these areas ensure we have the right configuration of scientific staff and skills needed to focus successfully on our goal of developing therapies for MND, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative conditions.

We will support you to develop your reputation through publication in the highest quality journals and attendance at national and international conferences, along with a range of other professional activities. You will be an active contributor to the University’s research community and will take on supervision and leadership roles commensurate with your skills and experience. In addition, you will help to raise the profile of the University through civic engagement activities. As a Fellow you will be both aspirational about your own career and inspirational to others. You will place strong emphasis on your personal development by committing to a rigorous development plan.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline along with a track record of quality research publications.

This post is full time, fixed term for 5 years.
