Our governance
The British Neuroscience Association is committed to representing our members at all levels of governance to ensure their needs and priorities are at the heart of our decisions. As a charity, the BNA is governed by Trustees who sit on Council, supported by various Committees and a staff (Executive) team.
Council holds ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the BNA’s activities, including management, except for matters requiring a general meeting of the members. Council delegates certain responsibilities to Committees, and Advisory Groups have been established to represent the interests and views of members in clearly defined areas.
The Trustees employ a Chief Executive, who is tasked with executing the decisions of the Committees and sub-committees and managing the day-to-day operations of the BNA's resources and Executive Team.
The Trustees bear legal responsibility for the BNA's governance, strategy, financial management, and overall direction, ensuring accountability to the Charity Commission and the fulfillment of the Society's objectives as a registered charity.

Following the approval of an updated governance structure at the 2025 Annual General Meeting, we will soon be advertising a number of Committee and Advisory Board positions. We are keen to ensure representation of BNA members at all levels of governance and will invite applications for a range of positions over the coming year. To gradually phase in new committees and groups, we will stagger the launch and therefore the recrutiment of roles for our newer committees.
At present we are looking for BNA member candidates for the following roles:
Early Career Research Trustee
Education and Professional Development Trustee
Please submit your manifesto (max 1,500 words) to [email protected] by 4 August 2025 to be considered.
