This training session is designed to make neurophysiology more accessible for students and early-career practitioners by introducing the fundamental principles of neurophysiology in the brain and spinal cord.
Neurology/Neuroscience is considered a difficult topic for many students and early career practitioners. This course will cover the basics of neurophysiology in the brain and spinal cord, targeted at anyone interested in better understanding how neurones and glia communicate. The focus of the session will be to provide an overview of key neurophysiological principles and to apply this knowledge to diseases of the brain. It is expected that, following the session, participants will use neurophysiological knowledge to better understand how changes in the physiology of the brain leads to disease.
Agenda highlights:
Introduction (5 mins)
Core neurophysiology overview (45 mins): action potentials, axonal conductance, synapses, and neuronal communication
Application to clinical conditions (45 mins): motor neurone disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and mood disorders
Q&A and clarification (20 mins)
Conclusion and key takeaways (5 mins)
Learning outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
Explain the link between brain and spinal cord neurophysiology and function.
Apply neurophysiology knowledge to understand the neurobiology of brain diseases and how physiological changes lead to pathology.
Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the session.

Senior Lecturer , Newcastle University Medical School
Paul is a senior lecturer at Newcastle University medical school and deputy dean for education in the faculty of medical sciences. He has a background in neuroscience, researching spinal cord injury at King’s College London, and dementia at the University of Birmingham, before moving into medical education at Newcastle University in 2013. He has taught neuroscience and neuroanatomy for over 20 years both in the UK and in Malaysia at Newcastle University’s Medical (NUMed) overseas campus and also have extensive experience in teaching online having worked as an associate lecturer for the Open University for over 10 years. Please accept {{cookieConsents}} cookies to view this content
