Reflections On BNA Training Academy Workshop: Model Organisms In Neuroscience Research

Reflections from a recent BNA training workshop, by Dr Muriel Desbois (Lecturer in Molecular Neuroscience, Keele University)

At the end of last year, the British Neuroscience Association (BNA) held a training workshop titled Model Organisms in Neuroscience Research – the what, when and why, featuring a panel of expert speakers from across the field.

A diverse toolkit for neuroscience

Neuroscience research relies on a diverse range of model systems to elucidate the complexities of the nervous system. At a recent BNA workshop, an expert panel shared their perspectives and expertise on some of the most widely used models in the field: Caenorhabditis elegans (Dr Alex Benedetto), Drosophila melanogaster (Dr Sue Broughton), zebrafish (Professor Caroline Brennan), mice (Dr Neil Dawson), rats (Dr Cheryl Hawkes), and human iPSCs (Dr Sandrine Willaime-Morawek).

Choosing the right model

The workshop offered a fascinating insight into how researchers select models for their experiments, considering factors such as advantages, limitations, technical feasibility, cost, and available research tools.

Complementary approaches and the 3Rs

A highlight of the workshop was the final discussion, which explored an emerging trend: researchers increasingly rely on complementary models within a single study. With the community recognizing the importance of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), this diversification may reduce the amount of preliminary work done exclusively in rodents, as researchers adopt pipelines that begin with faster and more cost-effective systems before validating findings in rodents.

In this context, universities and institutes need to facilitate access to a range of models, a challenge that could be mitigated through strong networks among local institutions. However, it is still vital to appreciate the indispensable role of animal research in advancing our understanding of the nervous system and improving health outcomes for patients.

Key takeaways

In conclusion this workshop was a great spread of all the keys model systems used in neuroscience research and how we can leverage the advantage of each one of them.
