BNA helps shape national best practice for neural organoid research
The British Neuroscience Association (BNA) has taken an active role in early discussions to develop UK best practice guidance for neural organoid research, following a recent stakeholder meeting convened by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
Representing the BNA, Policy Committee member Maria Beatrice Panico contributed the Association's perspective at the meeting, drawing on the BNA's Council-endorsed position statement on neural organoids, developed by the Policy Committee under the leadership of BNA Policy Trustee, Matthew Brown. This builds on the valuable contributions made by Vasanta Subramanian through the BNA’s earlier engagement with the Nuffield Council on Bioethics on this topic.
The meeting agreed to establish a cross-sector alliance to develop practical best practice guidance for the use of neural organoids in UK research. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics will coordinate the initiative, bringing together researchers, funders, professional bodies and other stakeholders.
The guidance is expected to cover key issues including the current capabilities and limitations of neural organoids, the concept of sentience, ethical considerations as the science develops, approaches to monitoring research, potential updates to regulatory guidance, and the importance of public engagement.
The BNA has volunteered to contribute scientific, clinical and regulatory expertise throughout the process, ensuring that the voice of the UK neuroscience community helps shape proportionate, evidence-based guidance.
This builds on the BNA's recently published position statement, which supports the Nuffield Council's conclusion that no new primary legislation is currently needed, while recognising the importance of developing practical safeguards, clear communication and flexible governance as the field advances. The BNA looks forward to working with partners across the sector as this important work progresses.
