Dr Neil Dawson Elected as Treasurer of the British Neuroscience Association

The British Neuroscience Association (BNA) is pleased to announce the election of Dr Neil Dawson as Treasurer of the Association.

As Treasurer, Dr Dawson will serve as a Director and Trustee of the BNA, helping oversee the organisation’s financial management, long-term sustainability and strategic financial planning. The role also includes chairing the BNA Finance Committee, supporting financial reporting and governance, and working closely with the BNA Council, office staff and external financial advisers.

Dr Dawson, a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience at Lancaster University, brings extensive experience in financial management across research funding, university departmental leadership and committee service, alongside longstanding involvement with the BNA throughout his scientific career. He has previously engaged with the Association as a Local Group Representative and through contributions to training and community initiatives.

In his manifesto, Dr Dawson highlighted the importance of ensuring that the BNA remains financially secure while continuing to strengthen its support for the neuroscience community:

“The BNA plays a vital role in bringing together a diverse and vibrant neuroscience community. From supporting students and researchers, to fostering collaboration across sectors and delivering high-quality training events, the BNA is central to the continued growth and impact of neuroscience in the UK and beyond.”

He also emphasised the importance of financial stewardship in enabling the future development of the BNA’s  activities, including meetings, training initiatives and community-building programmes. Speaking following his election, Dr Dawson said:

I am honoured to be appointed as Treasurer for the BNA. The BNA plays a vital role in supporting and bringing together one of the most active and impactful neuroscience communities in the world. Interacting with the BNA and its members has been a constant source of inspiration and support across my own scientific career. My ultimate goal as Treasurer will be to ensure that this legacy continues for all members, and that this is further enhanced, enabling the BNA to grow in strength, inclusivity and impact.

Leadership roles such as Treasurer are an important part of ensuring the organisation continues to grow in impact, inclusivity and sustainability for future generations of neuroscientists.
